The NACA Framework

NACA is the core framework used within The Coaching Mindset Methodology. It gives people a clear process for reflecting on experience, making sense of what happened and applying learning to future action.

Notice

What happened?

The first stage is about becoming aware of the experience. This involves identifying key moments, behaviours, emotions, decisions and outcomes.

  • What stood out?

  • What did I observe?

  • What did I feel?

  • What changed?

  • What mattered most?

Analyse

Why did it happen?

The second stage is about making sense of the experience. This means exploring possible causes, patterns, constraints and influences.

  • Why did this happen?

  • What influenced the outcome?

  • What assumptions did I make?

  • What was within my control?

  • What could I have interpreted differently?

Connect

What does this link to?

The third stage connects the experience to wider knowledge. This may include theory, previous experiences, professional standards, values, research or feedback.

  • What does this connect to?

  • Have I seen this pattern before?

  • What theory helps explain this?

  • What does this reveal about my practice?

  • What can I learn from others?

Apply

What will I do next?

The final stage turns reflection into action. This is where learning becomes practical, intentional and measurable.

  • What will I do differently?

  • What action will I take?

  • What will I test or practise?

  • How will I know if I have improved?

  • When will I review this again?

Why NACA Works

NACA works because it gives reflection a structure. It moves people beyond simply describing what happened and helps them understand, connect and apply their learning.
